British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have joined forces with France's air force in a combined operation targeting an underground arms cache in Syria used by the IS group, according to the British defence ministry.

The location, pinpointed through surveillance, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was situated in hills just north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a series of entry passages down to the depot... early reports are that the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the operation conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as ISIS - enforced militant control over large swathes of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike underscores our UK leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with our partners, to eliminate any resurgence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," the British Defence Secretary John Healey said.

UK warplanes have carried out surveillance missions over Syria to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of IS after its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of British forces involved in this strike for their skill and their bravery," the Defence Secretary added. "They were among numerous British troops on duty over the festive period. This action, to eliminate terrorist threats who threaten our safety, demonstrates how UK forces are always on standby, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and strong abroad."

Last December, the United States armed forces executed what it called a "massive strike" on Daesh sites in the country, following an attack claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations says Islamic State still has roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Syria and Iraq.
