In a significant move ahead of next year's general election, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the wake of large-scale and deadly youth-led demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the ouster of the sitting government.
A Pledge to Tackle Youth Concerns
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to focus on the grievances raised by the younger generation. This commitment comes after the turbulent anti-graft unrest that took place in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.
"Consensus should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was signed.
The September revolt was sparked by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for deeper resentment stemming from years of slow growth and persistent accusations of systemic graft in politics.
Terms of the New Political Partnership
According to the formal pact, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political leadership. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He was instrumental in forming the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was dissolved.
Wider Political Discussions Underway
In a separate event, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with several leading political leaders. These talks included former prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the first such dialogue since the time of the protests.
Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and open atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
